On March 9, the S&T Diplomatic Circle Kansai visited QIQB, the Center for Quantum Information and Quantum Biology, located at the University of Osaka's Toyonaka campus. Deputy Director Makoto Negoro introduced the institute, which brings together research in quantum computing, quantum communication, and quantum biology in a single interdisciplinary setting.
The visit centered on QIQB's 64-qubit and 144-qubit quantum computers, machine whose chip runs at approximately -273°C, a temperature far colder than outer space, to reduce interference and preserve quantum states. Almost all of its components were developed and produced in Japan, which sets it apart from many comparable systems elsewhere.
The delegation spoke with Deputy Director Negoro about the institute's research directions and how QIQB is working to turn advances in quantum science into applications that reach beyond the laboratory, including in biology and medicine.
Our thanks go to Dr. Felix Moesner (Switzerland) for coordinating this visit.
