The Science & Technology Diplomatic Circle Kansai had the privilege of visiting the renowned RIKEN Center for Biosystems Dynamics Research (BDR) in Kobe. Established in 2018, the BDR is at the forefront of cutting-edge research dedicated to understanding the complex dynamics of biological systems, cementing its status as one of Japan's leading research institutes. We were warmly welcomed by the center’s director upon our arrival. Following this, we were delivered a fascinating overview of the BDR's mission, which focuses on the study of living organisms from the molecular to the organismal level. This opening segment provided us with a broad understanding of the center’s role in pioneering advancements in health, medicine, and biotechnology.
We then had the opportunity to tour the BDR's state-of-the-art facilities, advanced technologies, and the groundbreaking research being conducted at their site in Kobe. The visit hihglighted areas of research, such as developmental biology, stem cell biology, aging and longevity, synthetic biology, as well as imaging and bioinformatics. We were given an in-depth tour of the bio and robotics research laboratories, and were introduced to their interdisciplinary approach, which brings together experts in biology, chemistry, physics, and computational science to address fundamental questions in biosystems dynamics.
The tour concluded with an engaging Q&A session, during which we had the opportunity to interact directly with resident researchers. This enriching dialogue allowed us to delve deeper into the specifics of their research projects and gain further insights into how their work contributes to tackling some of the most pressing challenges in health and disease.
Our heartfelt thanks go out to Senior Simon Psenner (Austria), Nikhilesh Giri (India), and Marco Prencipe (Italy) for their great efforts in coordinating this visit.
